Quick Review - Understanding Coaching

  1. Coaching is about inspiring individuals to change behaviors that lead to an increase in performance. It is helping an individual or team, reach their full potential!
  2. Our definition of coaching: "Coaching is unlocking a person or team's potential in order to maximize their performance. It is about asking rather than telling".
  3. Google's Project Oxygen identified coaching as the number one characteristic of good managers.
  4. Coaching philosophy 101 is Ask - Don't Tell. In today's business world, leaders, managers, and coaches no longer have all the answers.
  5. There are two types of reasons people commit to a job, which are known as rational and emotional commitment. Emotional commitment is four times more powerful than rational commitment when it comes to achieving high-performance.
  6. People join organizations and leave managers.
  7. Coaching at work has clearly shown to increase employee engagement, individual and team performance, levels of emotional commitment, connection to the bigger organizational picture and therefore a greater sense of meaning and purpose, productivity, psychological safety with their direct manager, and a sense of autonomy and accountability at work.
  8. At the same time, it has been shown to decrease staff turnover, absenteeism, and performance variability.
  9. Training in isolation fails.
  10. By 2026, 75% of the global workforce will be made up of Millennials (Gen Y & Gen Z). 55% of millennials say they are not engaged at work and a further 16% say they are actively disengaged.
  11. To help people reach their full potential "catch them doing things RIGHT".
  12. Most organizations have a haphazard approach when it comes to coaching. This is more detrimental than helpful to performance and productivity.
  13. Performance Coaching is coaching people to perform to the best of their ability in their day-to-day job.
  14. Developmental Coaching is about “what else” outside of everyday on-the-job performance (i.e., career development coaching).
